Part 1: The Hidden Threat of Loan Sharks

As the cost of living crisis deepens, more people are turning to illegal money lenders—commonly known as loan sharks—for short-term financial relief. These lenders charge extortionate interest rates and often use intimidation or violence to recover debts, trapping individuals in cycles of fear and poverty. Led by Dave Monk, LIAISE Officer at England Illegal Money Lending Team, this session will explore:

- What illegal money lending looks like in Cornwall today

- The devastating impact on individuals and families

- How community groups and churches can identify the signs and offer hope and support

Part 2: Staying Safe in the Digital World

From phishing scams and identity theft to online fraud and privacy breaches, cyber crime is a growing concern for people of all ages. Criminals are becoming more sophisticated in targeting individuals and communities—especially those who may be less digitally confident.

This talk delivered by Craig Lang, Cyber Protect Officer at Devon and Cornwall Police, will cover:

- The most common online scams and how they work

- How to protect yourself and your community from cyber threats

- Practical steps to improve digital safety and resilience

Hosted by Transformation Cornwall, this event is free to attend and open to all social action charities, community groups and faith-based organisations across Cornwall.

Whether you're a church leader, charity worker, volunteer, or community advocate, this awareness session will empower you to make a real difference in the lives of those most at risk. Let's work together to create a safer and more secure Cornwall!
